Orange Chef CEO and founder Santiago Merea has spent the last year developing a smart food scale called the Prep Pad that this week hits the shelves of Williams-Sonoma stores and becomes available for sale online.

Merea is betting that more people will want to know what is in their food, just like they're curious about the steps they walk and calories they burn, and the energy and cost savings from monitoring their home's temperature, the insight Nest's smart thermostats provide. In fact, he's so bullish on smart "connected devices," that his goal is to turn basic functional kitchen tools into smart ones. He wants Orange Chef to become the brand of the smart kitchen.

    As I referenced earlier, in some cases it involved a short-term price drop to lure previous customers back to the brand. There's a certain sense of Americana associated with Tide detergent that a small price cut certainly helps to sell. Cost-cutting on the job front also helps. P&G is reducing a grand total of 5,700 jobs worldwide and cutting back on excess domestic expenses while, at the same time, also boosting its headcount in overseas markets where growth rates are often in the double digits. Divesting has been yet another source of profits for P&G. By ridding itself of non-core assets -- like selling the Pringles chip brand to Kellogg (NYSE: K  ) for $2.7 billion -- P&G is free to focus its efforts (and its boatload of cash) on various growth initiatives.

    Kellogg is a quality company with many superb brands to its name, but the stock�� momentum is beginning to fade and debt management has been subpar. Innovation would have the potential to lead to increased revenue, which could then help pay off debt. However, the innovation isn�� there. Pinnacle Foods Inc., incorporated on July 28, 2003, is a manufacturer, marketer and distributor of branded food products in North America.
